Well, I haven’t been totally unproductive for the past month but I haven’t exactly been setting the shop on fire with activity either. However, now that it is warming up, I’ll be spending more time working on the bike so it should progress more quickly…
As “old bike people” know, the carbs on a 37 year old bike are usually in pretty bad shape. These were bad but not terrible. I bead blasted the float bowls and slide covers so they are nice and shiny. The carb bodies sat in the parts washer for several days soaking and then were cleaned with purple cleaner and small bristle brushes to get them back to factory cleanliness. They came out very nice. Since the bike had been stored indoors all these years, there was not hardly any corrosion at all. The gold-ish looking cad plating on some of the hardware is worn but not really terrible. The jets and needles soaked in a mixture of carb cleaner and Sea Foam for about a week and that made cleaning them pretty easy.
All assembled, they look great but these old carbs are much more complicated than newer CV carbs and have many more parts, linkages, springs, etc. Definitely requires patience!
