Today, we are going to look at how to locate and drill the triple clamp so that you have the handlebars located in the right place and, just as importantly, you have room on the bottom for the nuts that will hold them on. These are Yamaha FZ1 risers and bars, but you can uses just about anything as long as you are willing to relocate you brake/clutch/throttle lines and cables. I’ll show you how to do this in a later post. But, you will need to relocate them unless you are going to be happy with a max rise of about 1.5 inches. The reason I developed this modification is because I wanted a full 3 inches rise.
If you look at the pictures, you can see about where you need to have the holes drilled for the risers. It is really important that you have a good machine shop drill the holes because if they are off just a little, your handlebars will be crooked. If the holes are drilled too big, you run the risk of not being able to get the risers to tighten down in the right position. You also need room on the bottom for the washers and nuts to clear the webbing.
Since the studs on these risers are pressed in when they are cast, they will not screw out (this only applies to these FZ1 risers). You will need to cut them off and re-thread them so that you have threads to tighten the nuts down. The best thing to do is to take the triple clamp and the bars mounted in the risers to the machine shop and show them what you want to do. Any good machinist will be able to handle the rest. If you want to send them to us to machine, contact me for pricing.
