Ben Spies won at Mid-Ohio to soldify his points lead in the series and take him within 1 win of breaking Mladin’s record. Speed has the full story-
Sunday’s AMA Superbike contest at Mid-Ohio was one of the most hotly contested of the 2006 season, with scrappy battles to be found virtually throughout the top ten. Well, excluding the lead position, which was once again firmly controlled by Yoshimura Suzuki’s prodigious Ben Spies, who claimed yet another flag-to-flag triumph to complete the weekend doubleheader sweep.
It was the 22-year-old’s tenth victory of the season, leaving him just one shy of the all-time mark set last season by his teammate and key rival, six-time AMA Superbike champion Mat Mladin. Spies will have five more races in which to establish a new mark, and while he is now well in command of the championship — his biggest concern — the Texan again declared that he’ll continue to fight for wins so long as he’s able to do so comfortably.
